![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() “The fact that non-international armed conflicts are today the majority of armed conflicts shows the changing nature of warfare,” underlines Robert Roth, Director of the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights. These conflicts took place in 18 States: Afghanistan, Central African Republic (CAR), Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Egypt, India, Iraq, Libya, Mali, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Thailand, Ukraine and Yemen. The 500 page War Report is the only independent and comprehensive global classification of armed conflicts under international law.Ģ9 of the armed conflicts were ‘non-international’ in character, between non-state armed groups or between one or more States and one or more non-state armed groups. Casualties in 2014 significantly increased, indeed almost doubled, compared to the 93,500 reported in 2013. Iraq suffered the highest number of casualties (45,450 killed or injured), followed by Syria (31,253) and Afghanistan (23,578). The great majority of victims were civilians. At least 171,400 people were killed or injured in the world’s 42 armed conflicts in 2014, according to the 2014 War Report. ![]()
